Lifestyle Photography, what is it?

When people are looking for a photographer, they generally know what type of photographer they want.  They either want a portrait photographer, wedding photographer, event photographer, etc.  Well within these types there are styles.  Each photographer has their own style per se, but it even goes beyond that.  I’m sure you’ve heard of traditional & photojournalistic.  These are two styles.  Traditional photography is created through posing your subjects & setting the scene.  Photojournalistic is creating images while they are happening, with no posing by the photographer.

Lifestyle photography is  basically recreating everyday scenes, but in a controlled way.  There is a little bit of posing going on, but it’s a lot looser than traditional photography. What I mean by that is, when I’m photographing a small child with their favorite toy they can move & play with the toy while I shoot.  When there is a couple, I may tell them where I want them to sit or stand, but I let them interact with one another & shoot during that time.   With this type of photography people are generally more relaxed & you can see more of their personalities, especially with children.  This can also be considered as semi-candid photography.  My favorite thing to do is to catch people laughing or in an unguarded moment.  Those are the best images!  Anyway, below are a few samples of my favorite lifestyle portraits.

About Ayesha

I am a married, mother of one & a passionate photographer. I've been shooting since I was 11 & am mostly self-taught. Attended the Art Institute of Atlanta to further hone my skills & in 2003 decided to start my own photography business, working part-time. In 2005 I was able to start working full-time & I love it. During my growth phase, I was vacillating between the types of photography I wanted to do. After several sessions, I realized that I wanted to specialize in children & couples. I still photograph other subjects, but those two are my favorites. At any rate, it's all about the relationship between my subjects & me & capturing those special moments.
