What do you specialize in?

It’s that time again.  Time for my weekly blog.  This week, like any other week, I have to figure out what I’m going to write about & then it hit me, my specialty.  Everyone has some sort of specialty whether it be in life, relationships or their jobs.  My specialty is portraits.  I used to say that I was a photographer who specialized in children’s portraits, which is partially true.  I love photographing children, but I love photographing in general.  Now I say that I specialize in location photography, with a concentration in children & couples.  That sounds rather clinical I know, but it’s true.

What I love about photographing children is their innocence.  The really young ones don’t worry about whether or not they are looking their best, they just are who they are.   With couples, I love their interactions.  Many times I may just place them together & pretend I am checking some settings in my camera while they interact.  I get some of the best images that way!

I have found that sometimes you have to refocus (pun intended) on what your specialty is. Portrait photography may be a general area, but there are so many kinds of photography that I feel it’s a really good niche for me because I don’t only photograph children, but families, couples, birthday parties & the like.  Any reason to photograph anything is reason enough for me.  So think about it….what do you specialize in?

About Ayesha

I am a married, mother of one & a passionate photographer. I've been shooting since I was 11 & am mostly self-taught. Attended the Art Institute of Atlanta to further hone my skills & in 2003 decided to start my own photography business, working part-time. In 2005 I was able to start working full-time & I love it. During my growth phase, I was vacillating between the types of photography I wanted to do. After several sessions, I realized that I wanted to specialize in children & couples. I still photograph other subjects, but those two are my favorites. At any rate, it's all about the relationship between my subjects & me & capturing those special moments.
